A rite of passage

Posted on July 15, 2009 by Nancy

I’ve been suffering from multiple migraines per week… thankfully I have an understanding husband who is a hands-on Daddy. There are many days that he walks in the door from work and I stumble up the stairs to my nice dark, quiet bedroom to try to find some relief and comfort. He’ll often take the kids out of the house to remove the chaos from my overly sensitive, migraine screaming head.

Last weekend, was yet another one of “those” days. I laid in bed moaning and boo-hooing and I heard the garage door open and close. I slipped off to never-never land and awoke an hour or so later to the sounds of my young men returning. Feeling much better, I went down to greet my boys. My 4 year old Ian was especially excited to see me. “Mommy, Mommy!!!! Are you feeling better? I want you to see what Daddy got me!”. His absolute delight was contagious and I found myself grinning from ear to ear right along with him as he grabbed my hand and pulled me into the kitchen to see what “Daddy got him”.

There it was – in all it’s glory. A brand new shiny red bicycle. His first “real” bike. He was so proud and excited. My eyes welled up with joy and I looked up to see my husband carefully watching my expression.

He told me he was worried that I’d be upset that he bought it for him without my being there. With tears in my eyes I said” No honey, you did a good thing. My Daddy bought me MY first red bicycle and it’s the perfect thing for a Daddy to do”

I have fond memories of my Daddy also being the one to teach me to ride it without training wheels. I remember him running up and down the sidewalk, there to catch me if (and when) I fell. His encouragement of “keep trying, you’ll get it… you’re doing wonderful honey…. look at what a big girl you are!”

I looked long and hard to try to find a photo of me and my first red bike to put in this blog post, but alas I couldn’t locate one. But I feel it truly is a “rite of passage” for a little child to receive their first red bike from their Daddy. And for some reason to me… the bike being “red” makes it perfect.

Good Job Honey!

Aw, how sweet! Sorry to hear those nasty headaches continue. Have you tried taking feverfew? It’s an herb – my son had very nasty migraines, I put him on that and it sure helped. He got them only rarely then and they were “manageable”.
