Reading After Twilight

Posted on June 03, 2009 by Nancy

As promised, I’m posting my most recently read books.  Like many of you, I had a hard time reading ANYTHING after Twilight, that book is so obsessive.  But I did manage to find several series that have brought me back down to earth slowly so as now I’m able to enjoy all reading again.  First off let me say that I’m not normally a “vampire” book reader.  I never got into the Anne Rice books, and I tried to read the Sookie Stackhouse books (before Twilight) because I’d enjoyed the True Blood HBO series.  I just couldn’t get into them.  Twilight somehow changed how and what I was willing/able to read.  Nothing was holding my interest anymore.

So here is a list of my cures… in the order that I found to be best in letting me down gently.

House of Night. IF you read these on your Kindle, they are full of errors… they’re not unreadable but I’m assuming the actual books are in a lot better format. These are very quick reads and it’s a really good story. I enjoyed them a lot and managed to read all of them in about a week.

and the 6th one is due to come out in the fall.

Next is the Vampire Academy Series
This series was a great followup to the House of Night series. It steers you even a little more away from vampires and like House of Night and Twilight is not a stereo-typical mean old, nasty vampire book but rather a good story.

Those are my best recommendations for recovering from Twilight! I hope you enjoy them. I’ve read a lot more since these (not only in the Vampire genre, I was able to branch back out!) so I’ll do another list in another week or so for those of you that weren’t hooked on Twilight like I was!

Ahhhhhh Twilight, I even have my mom hooked on these books now and she despises Vampires and anything that sounds like it could be scary. For the record, Twilight is NOT scary!

I just picked up the first House of Night yesterday. I’ve got 3 more chapters before I finish Breaking Dawn (once again) and then I’ll start it.

  2. Nicole says:

I really enjoyed both of those series! Vampire Academy I really liked…the friendships/relationships. Looking forward to continuing with both series.

  3. Carrie says:

Thanks for the great reading list!! I am a Twilight fanatic too and I need help recovering, LOL!! I just got barnes and noble coupons, so I am going to get started one of those two series this week. I will let you know how it works out!!!

I am with you on the trouble finding reading after Twilight. I have read the books on your list, and The House of Night books aren’t much better then the kindle version. They are very sloppily edited, but I agree they kept my attention.

    I do have a suggestion/recommendation:

The “Evernight” series by Claudia Gray. There are 2 books out “Evernight” and “stargazer”. And there are 2 more coming.

  5. Helene says:

Yeah! I’ve been looking forward to this post!! I wrote down those book series and I’ll definitely be checking them out. Nothing has caught my attention since Twilight so I can’t wait to find something that I can get lost in again.

  6. I always like to hear what books other people are reading so I can get some new ideas. I don’t know anything about these that you mentioned, so I’ll have to check them out. It really can be hard to find something satisfying to read after you’ve finished a series like Twilight. For two months after I finished Breaking Dawn, I kept picking up books and putting them back down after a chapter or two. Nothing “stuck.” I bought the Sookie Stackhouse book (I liked the HBO True Blood series, too) but I couldn’t really get into it, either.

Thanks for the recommendations! Hope you have a great weekend. :-)

  7. sally says:

Vampires yummy..I’m on book 7 of 9 of the Sookies Stackhouse series…but in a few days I’ll need a new breed of Vamps, so thanks for the recommendation

  8. Expat Mom says:

Good list! I´ll be checking these out. I read the entire Sookie Stackhouse series in a couple of weeks after Twilight, but then, I´ve been a vampire fan since I was fairly young. Another good vampire book is The Silver Kiss, also young adult. Not sure who it´s by though . . . it´s been years since I read it.

At the moment I´m reading Lynsay Sands´ Argeneau series (Single White Vampire, Love Bites, Tall Dark and Hungry, etc. So far, so good!

  9. Miriam says:

Hi… I loved the twilight series as well and could not get much into anything after that but someone did recommend the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz. It’s not about vampire’s but I like them. Now I’m looking for something else to read.

  10. KezzieQ says:

If a little more than twilight as i was still able to carry on with my life while i read them instead of staying up all night unable to rip myself from the Book Binding. My Husband was so pissed off! anyway im now looking for other books Please Could everyone send there suggestions To my Facebook ~ http://www.Facebook.com/Kezzieq ~ Thanks *TEAM EDWARD*
